Find missing image alt text and decide what to fix

Alt text supplies a text alternative for an image. This free image alt text checker reads image elements in a public page's HTML and lists image URLs with missing or empty alt attributes. Use it to find candidates for review, then decide what each image communicates in context. No account is needed.

Missing and empty alt text are different

  • Missing alt: the image has no alt attribute. Review its purpose and add an appropriate text alternative or a deliberate empty attribute.
  • Empty alt: the attribute exists as alt="". This can be correct for a purely decorative image that adds no information.
  • Existing alt: text is present, but that alone does not prove it describes the image or its function well.

Examples for informative and decorative images

Product photo: alt="Blue ceramic mug with a curved handle" may help when those visible details matter to the product.

Decorative divider: <img src="divider.png" alt=""> avoids announcing a graphic that adds no meaning.

For an image that acts as a link or button, describe its purpose. For charts, provide the important information in nearby text as well.

How to use the findings

  1. Check a specific page and review the listed image URLs in their page context.
  2. Update the image's alt field in your CMS or the template that renders it. Be concise, relevant, and avoid inserting keywords that do not describe the image.
  3. Publish and recheck the page. Review shared template images across the pages that use them.

Limits of an automated image check

This tool does not understand an image's meaning or certify accessibility compliance. It reads HTML image elements without executing JavaScript, so it can miss images added later or used as CSS backgrounds. The lazy-loading count is an inventory, not a list of errors: a prominent hero image may correctly load immediately.

Use the accessibility checker for other basic page checks and the W3C decorative-image guidance to decide when an empty alternative is appropriate.
